That’s right folks – over 400 volunteers have been hard at work all year to bring you this much-anticipated plant-fest, and it’s almost here! Metro Vancouver’s largest plant sale spotlights over 40 000 plants, ranging from herbs and veggies to grasses, trees and shrubs to roses, perennials to native plants, and more. This year, the theme is “Small Space Gardens”, so each category will feature plants specially-suited to containers and small gardens, amongst other non-container plants – an apt focus in light of the city’s growing number of apartments and condos.
So bring your buggy, wagon, wheel barrow, or pack mule out to the Gardens bright and early on Sunday, April 29th! The gates open at 10am, but previous years have seen eager gardeners (just itching with Plantmania) line up outside as early as 6am. Within fifteen minutes of opening, over 1000 guests rush in to claim their garden goodies, and by closing time at 4pm, there are hardly any left. The few that do remain are donated to seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities (which will certainly appreciate the Small Garden Spaces theme).
Make sure you dress for the weather, and leave your John Fluevog originals at home – the ground will get muddy under the tread of Eager Greeners. The sale will have plant hold and plant pick-up options available, and can accept payments by Visa, Mastercard, debit, cash, or cheque. The big perk: admission to the Gardens is free to all green-thumbed groupies, so you can troll the groves and find inspiration for exhibiting your plant purchases. And if you’re so inclined, bring your prizes by our cafe – we’re especially fond of the herb varieties.
